Article from Pine Island Onion quarterly: Spring 2010
From the District of Pine Island Fire Department; Board of Directors:
As can be seen driving down County Route 1, construction for the new Pine Island Firehouse is well under way with a completion date of June 15. Before you know it, we will be moving equipment into our new home and operating from one location. We have done our best to remain fiscally responsible and provide the residents of the district with a firehouse that is not only the state of the art but matches aesthetically with the surrounding buildings. This endeavor could not have been possible without the continued support of our residents and neighbors, and local businesses. On behalf of the Board of Fire Commissioners and our firefighter members, we thank you for your ongoing support and the opportunity to serve you.

TO THE PINE ISLAND SUMMERFEST COMITTEE: THANKS TO ALL WHO PARTICIPATED: YOUR EFFORT, TIME, AND DEVOTION MADE THIS A WONDERFUL AND MEMORABLE EVENT!
On behalf of the Polish Legion of American Veterans, Memorial Post 16, Pine Island, the Pine Island Fire Co. and the Pine Island Summerfest Committee I want to thank all of those who helped make this years event a success. Without your support, we would not have been able to make this event happen.
I especially want to thank Price Chopper of Warwick for its generosity. Everyone’s efforts are deeply appreciated.
There is always that one individual who goes above and beyond to make things successful. Speaking on behalf of Car Show Chairman Ray Hogan, Chief and Co-chairman Rich Koziola and myself, we want to say a special “Thank You” to Julie Cutler for her endless hours of hard work to make this event a success.

Pine Island firefighters and EMS workers were called away from the Summerfest activities on Saturday afternoon, Aug. 14, to respond to a motor vehicle accident on Missionland Road. First-responders found two people who were injured and unable to exit their car, which had dropped off the roadway into a deep side road ditch. The angle of the vehicle made it difficult to remove them and access to the driver’s side door was not possible. Both were eventually removed and taken by two Pine Island ambulances to the hospital for treatment.
DUTY CALLS: FROM WARWICK ADVERTISER: AUGUST 14, 2010
Pine Island - The people who call Pine Island celebrated their heritage, their land and their neighbors last week in large and small ways.
Summerfest began with an onion-eating contest Friday night and drew to a close Sunday afternoon with a similar contest offering pierogis. There also was food to be eaten at a more reasonable pace, as well as a variety of music - including polkas, of course.
In addition, 1st Lt. Jason Mazzella was awarded the Pine Island Summerfest 2010 Distinguished Citizen Award. Mazzella is still in Colorado where he continues his medical treatment after being wounded by a 107mm rocket in Afghanistan on Feb. 20, 2010.
He listened to the ceremony via cell phone and his voice was carried over loudspeaker to all those in attendance. He thanked everyone for the award and asked that everyone give a silent moment for three of his friends who had been killed in action and for all the other military personnel still fighting in Afghanistan and Iraq.
His father, Mark Mazzella, also said his son had also recently received the Bronze Star for other actions he had coordinated while fighting insurgents in Afghanistan.
