Pine Island Summerfest
Distinguished Citizen of the Year:
JASON MAZZELLA

Pine Island - The people who call Pine Island celebrated their heritage, their land and their neighbors last week in large and small ways.
Summerfest began with an onion-eating contest Friday night and drew to a close Sunday afternoon with a similar contest offering pierogis. There also was food to be eaten at a more reasonable pace, as well as a variety of music - including polkas, of course.
In addition, 1st Lt. Jason Mazzella was awarded the Pine Island Summerfest 2010 Distinguished Citizen Award. Mazzella is still in Colorado where he continues his medical treatment after being wounded by a 107mm rocket in Afghanistan on Feb. 20, 2010.
He listened to the ceremony via cell phone and his voice was carried over loudspeaker to all those in attendance. He thanked everyone for the award and asked that everyone give a silent moment for three of his friends who had been killed in action and for all the other military personnel still fighting in Afghanistan and Iraq.
His father, Mark Mazzella, also said his son had also recently received the Bronze Star for other actions he had coordinated while fighting insurgents in Afghanistan.
